A Short Break: Panama City & the Canal

In 3 to 4 days you can cover the essentials — the Panama Canal, historic Casco Viejo, an Emberá village visit, and a jungle or waterfall day trip. Ideal for a long weekend or a cruise stopover.

The Highlights Trip: Highlands & Islands

With 5 to 7 days you add the Boquete highlands, Chiriquí, or the Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro to the Panama City core. This is the sweet spot for a first full visit and our most requested length.

The Grand Tour: Coast to Coast

Seven to ten days (like the detailed itinerary above) lets you travel from the Caribbean to the Pacific — Boquete, Bocas del Toro, beaches and rainforest — at an unhurried pace.

A Short Break Day by Day: Three to Four Days

Every day below is a tour we operate ourselves, with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in Panama City — so you keep one hotel for the whole stay and never repack. The per-person prices are the ones published on our own tour pages; on a multi-day booking we quote the days together with your transport and accommodation as a single number.

Day One — Miraflores Locks, the Causeway and Casco Viejo

The Panama City & Panama Canal tour (US$100 per person) picks you up at 8:30 a.m. and takes in the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center, the Amador Causeway, the Coastal Belt and the old quarter of Casco Viejo, with an expert guide who works in English and Spanish. No meals are included on this one, which leaves lunch and the evening free for the Casco Viejo restaurants. More context in our guide to Panama City experiences and day tours.

Day Two — Rainforest and Wildlife on the Canal Watershed

The Monkey Island Boat Tour at the Canal (US$120 per person, 7:00 a.m. pick-up) runs through Gamboa, the Chagres River, Gatún Lake and Soberanía National Park. It includes the boat tour, a guided walk in the rainforest, national park entrance fees, bottled water and a local biologist guide. Most of the day is spent sitting on the boat; the forest walk is up to an hour on a nature trail with steps and a couple of small creek crossings. Birdwatchers can swap it for the Panama Birdwatching Tour (US$120 per person, 5:45 a.m. pick-up) on Pipeline Road in Soberanía National Park, which includes entrance to the Discovery Tower observation platform. Day Three — The Emberá Village on the Chagres

The Emberá Village Tour (US$150 per person, 7:00 a.m. pick-up) goes up the historic Chagres River by motorised dugout canoe, roughly thirty minutes each way, into Chagres National Park and Alajuela Lake. Lunch, water, the boat ride and an expert local guide are included. There is time to see the wood carving, the vegetable-ivory seed sculptures and the basket weaving, to walk in the village and to swim. Day Four — Caves, a Waterfall or the Caribbean

A fourth day is a choice of three, all with a 7:00 a.m. pick-up from your Panama City hotel:

• Cave Exploration Tour — US$150 per person, at Bayano Lake and Caves. Moderate: you walk in and out of an underground river over sand, rock and some bouldering, with ankle-to-knee-deep water and a couple of pools where swimming is required, life jacket on. Life vest, flashlights, a lunch prepared by the local community and all land and water transfers are included. Bring your passport for the police checkpoint. Detail in the Bayano caves guide.
• Rainforest Tour – Hidden Waterfall Hike — US$150 per person, in the east of Panama Province and the Nusagandi Guna Protected Area. Challenging: about an hour and a half of hiking each way on a narrow dirt trail with steep, muddy and slippery sections, ending at a waterfall with a natural stone pool. • Caribbean Island Experience — US$160 per person, from the Pacific to the Caribbean in one day: a small boat out to Isla Mamey, Caribbean-style food, and the Portobelo area on the way back. Easy, lunch included.

Another option for the fourth day is the Panama Canal Expansion & San Lorenzo Fort tour (US$150 per person), which crosses to the Caribbean side for the Agua Clara Visitor Center, the San Lorenzo Fort and San Lorenzo National Park, with lunch included and easy walking throughout.

The Highlights Trip Day by Day: Five to Seven Days

Five to seven days keeps the Panama City core above and then heads west out of the city. These legs follow the same route as the Best of Panama itinerary detailed on this page, and the accommodations named are the ones we use on it.

Days One to Three — Panama City, the Canal and the Emberá

As above: the Canal and Casco Viejo, a rainforest and wildlife day on the watershed, and the Emberá village on the Chagres, all from one hotel in Panama City (El Ejecutivo Hotel or similar).

Day Four — West Along the Pacific to Santa Fe

You cross the bridge over the Panama Canal and drive west on the Pan-American Highway through the Panamanian countryside, with lunch at a beach and stops for local snacks along the way. In the late afternoon you reach the mountains and Santa Fe National Park, check in, have dinner and take a walk in the forest looking for nocturnal frogs. Lodging: Coffee Mountain or similar.

Day Five — Hiking to Hidden Waterfalls

A day for hiking: a small mountain town and the trails around it, through lush jungle to waterfalls, many with natural stone pools perfect for a swim, past tropical plants, trees and colourful butterflies. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. Lodging: Coffee Mountain or similar.

Day Six — Las Lajas Beach and the Boquete Valley

The pace slows: Las Lajas Beach, warm water, an unpopulated stretch of sand, fresh fish for lunch and a cold Panama beer. In the late afternoon you arrive in the Boquete valley, at 3,500 feet above sea level and a pleasant 21 °C (70 °F), where the local trade is flowers, coffee, strawberries and other fruit. Day Seven — A Boquete Day of Your Choosing

In Boquete you pick the day you want: bird watching, a canopy zip-line, cloud forest hiking, a coffee farm tour or white water river rafting. You can also add extra nights in Boquete rather than turning back. Lodging: Isla Verde Hotel or similar.

If you would rather finish on the coast than in the highlands, the Caribbean Island Experience (US$160 per person) puts Isla Mamey and the Portobelo area into a single day from Panama City instead.

The Grand Tour Day by Day: Seven to Ten Days, Coast to Coast

This is the Best of Panama Adventure Vacation set out in full at the top of this page: nine days and eight nights, US$2,750 per person, taxes not included, in a small group of 4 minimum to 8 maximum (larger family groups are accepted). It includes airport pick-up and drop-off, all internal transportation, meals as indicated, lodging, the tours outlined in the itinerary and an expert local guide throughout. It does not include international airfare or hotel extras such as laundry, telephone calls and room service. Most of the activities are easy; the hiking days are moderate.

The Nine Days at a Glance

• Day 1 — Arrival at Tocumen International Airport and transfer to Panama City. Lodging: El Ejecutivo Hotel or similar.
• Day 2 — The Panama Canal: a boat tour through the rainforest, a guided walk on local trails, lunch at a Panamanian-style restaurant and the Miraflores Locks in the afternoon. Lodging: El Ejecutivo Hotel or similar.
• Day 3 — West on the Pan-American Highway with lunch at a beach, then Santa Fe National Park and a night walk for frogs. Lodging: Coffee Mountain or similar.
• Day 4 — Hiking to hidden waterfalls with natural stone pools. Lodging: Coffee Mountain or similar.
• Day 5 — Las Lajas Beach, then up to the Boquete valley. Lodging: Isla Verde Hotel or similar.
• Day 6 — Boquete, your choice of bird watching, canopy zip-line, cloud forest hiking, coffee farm tour or white water river rafting. Lodging: Isla Verde Hotel or similar.
• Day 7 — A second Boquete tour, then the mountain drive to Bocas del Toro and the boat across to the main island. Lodging: Bocas del Toro Hotel or similar.
• Day 8 — A Bocas del Toro boat day with snorkelling, led by the guide who drives the local scientists around the archipelago, then the flight back to Panama City. Lodging: El Ejecutivo Hotel or similar.
• Day 9 — Transfer to the international airport for your flight home.

Adding Days at Either End

Two natural ways to reach ten days: extra nights in Boquete, which the itinerary already allows for on the Boquete day, or an extra day out of Panama City at the start or the end — the Caribbean Island Experience, the Bayano caves or the hidden waterfall hike. What Each Day Costs

These are the per-person prices published on our own tour pages, so you can see what a custom multi-day route is built from. A multi-day package is quoted as one number because it also covers lodging, all internal transport and the meals listed in the itinerary — tell us your dates and group size and we will send an itemised quote.

Day-tour pick-up and drop-off is from any hotel inside Panama City. Dreams, Westin Playa Bonita and Intercontinental Playa Bonita sit outside the city limits; pick-up from those is available at an extra US$15 per person.

A Note on San Blas, and Where Our Caribbean Days Go

We are often asked to add the San Blas islands to a multi-day route. We do not operate San Blas at the moment, and we would rather say so than sell a day we do not run. Our Caribbean day trip from the city is the Caribbean Island Experience to Isla Mamey, with the Portobelo area on the way back, and the longer routes reach the Caribbean at Bocas del Toro, which is day seven of the nine-day itinerary above. More Questions About Multi-Day Panama Tours

How big are the groups?

Small: 4 minimum and 8 maximum on the nine-day Best of Panama itinerary, and larger family groups are accepted. The day tours run with similar numbers, up to eight or ten depending on the tour.

How fit do I need to be?

Most of the nine-day itinerary is easy; the hiking days are moderate. Among the day tours, the Canal boat day and the Caribbean island day are easy, the Bayano caves are moderate, and the hidden waterfall hike is genuinely challenging — roughly an hour and a half each way on a steep, muddy trail.

Which hotels do you use?

On the nine-day route: El Ejecutivo Hotel in Panama City, Coffee Mountain in the Santa Fe highlands, Isla Verde Hotel in Boquete and a hotel in Bocas del Toro — or similar in each place. On a custom route we match the accommodation to your budget.

What is not included?

International airfare and hotel extras such as laundry, telephone calls and room service. Taxes are not included in the US$2,750 per-person price of the nine-day itinerary.
