A route that works (it’s the one we run)
Our most-requested trip — the 9-day Best of Panama itinerary — follows this arc: arrive in Panama City → the Panama Canal (more on why it’s special below) → Pacific coast beaches, countryside and Santa Fe National Park → hiking to hidden waterfalls → Las Lajas beach and Boquete → Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side → departure. Each leg is a comfortable drive from the last — that’s the point. Guests often extend with extra days in Bocas, Boquete, or back in the city (the Bayano caves are a favorite add-on).
Why the Canal is a nature stop (not just an engineering one)
Here’s what most itineraries miss: the Canal watershed is one of Panama’s great ecological reserves. The protected rainforest around it is what generates the rainfall that keeps the Canal running — so a Canal visit here pairs locks and ships with genuine jungle, monkeys included.
The biggest mistake: overpacking
After years of running these trips, the most common mistake isn’t the route — it’s the suitcase. Panama requires no formal clothing, anywhere. What you actually need:
- Hiking shoes — accept now that they will get wet
- Dry sneakers for towns and travel days
- Sandals for beach and boats
- One light layer for Boquete’s mountain evenings — no heavy jackets, ever
Beyond that: swimwear, quick-dry clothes, sunscreen, repellent. Done.
